Youtube: The trend setter of online video-sharing platform

The world’s most popular and largest online video network – Youtube hit yet another milestone of getting more than 1 billion unique visitors every month. Yes! The popularity of Youtube is huge as over the years as it has allowed billions of people to discover, watch and share originally created videos. Their close rival, Facebook Inc reached 1 billion active users in September.

Since the official launch of Youtube in 2005, it has gained massive popularity all over the world.  It was found that nearly one out of every two people on the Internet visits YouTube. In 2006, Google bought YouTube for 1.76 billion dollars when the video site had an estimated 50 million users worldwide. In October 2011, the website hit a record of 800 million unique monthly viewers.

Google’s advertising research director, Gunnard Johnson said in a report that Generation C is most powering Youtube’s growth. Johnson said. “For the first time, an entire generation has grown up watching content on their own terms. This generation is defined by the Internet, mobile, and social – consuming content when and where they want. Nielsen calls this group Generation C because they are not just defined by their age group, but by their connected behavior.”

“Over the next few months, we’ll take a deeper look at Gen C, sharing insights and trends about our audience on YouTube,” Johnson added. “To start, we’re focusing on how Gen C watches YouTube across devices.”

The popularity of various music videos such as South Korean singer Psy’s “Gangnam Style” has largely contributed to an increase in viewership on YouTube. The video has so far clocked up 1.45 billion views. Now with 800 million unique monthly users, Youtube has emerged as Google’s one of the main sources of revenue outside of its internet search engine business.

The company said that “YouTube’s monthly viewership is the equivalent of roughly 10 Super Bowl audiences.” The company further added that “If YouTube were a country, it’d be the third largest on earth, right behind China and India.”
